Moreover, it is the only known asteroid to have an earth-like structure -- with a core, mantle and crust.

COMPUTER SIMULATION RECONSTRUCTS COLLISIONS BETWEEN ASTEROIDS

Using a three-dimensional computer simulation, Martin Jutzi from the Center for Space and Habitability (CSH) at the University of Bern has now accurately reconstructed how Vesta collided with other asteroids twice over a billion years ago. The models show that the protoplanet owes its elliptical shape to these collisions and that they also scarred its surface structure. The simulations also enable detailed conclusions on the composition and properties of Vesta's interior to be drawn for the first time, which helps us to better understand the evolution of the solar system.

After all, the formation of planets largely depends upon collisions between celestial bodies. "Our method facilitates especially informative analyses of image and measurement data from space missions," says Martin Jutzi. The study, which was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the EPFL, France and the USA, features as the cover story in the February 14 issue of Nature.

MODELS UNCOVER HIDDEN SECRETS

Previously, observations with the Hubble Space Telescope provided initial evidence of a giant crater at Vesta's south pole. Then, in 2007, NASA's "Dawn" probe began its space voyage into the solar system's past. Starting in the summer of 2011, it closely orbited Vesta for one year. Images from within the visible range as well as other measurement data provided information on the asteroid's topography and the composition of the minerals that are visible on its surface. It became apparent that the crater observed by Hubble at Vesta's south pole is actually composed of two partially overlapping basins.

Based on this information, the computer simulations by Jutzi's team now demonstrate exactly how two consecutive impacts of celestial bodies led to the formation of the observed overlapping basins, which almost span the entire southern hemisphere of Vesta. The models show the size (66 and 64 kilometres in diameter), velocity (5.4 kilometres per second) and the impact angle of the bodies that collided with Vesta. This reveals a lot about the properties of the objects that were near the protoplanet a billion years ago.

The final images of the simulations closely resemble the shape and topography of Vesta's southern hemisphere as observed by the Dawn mission. The models even accurately reproduce the spiral-shaped structures inside the youngest crater which are visible on images from the Dawn mission. "This shows how reliable our method is," rejoices Jutzi. The researchers assume that the models also provide information about previously hidden features of Vesta. For instance, the simulations reveal that the material exposed by the impacts comes from depths of up to 100 kilometres. "Based on the sort and distribution of this material we are able to precisely reconstruct the various inner layers of Vesta," explains Philippe Gillet, Direktor des Earth and Planetary Science Laboratory der EPFL.

NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) has completed the commissioning phase, and now is ready to begin the mission's primary science phase. After the successful Orbit Lowering Maneuver (OLM-3) on Nov. 10, LADEE was in an elliptic pre-science orbit. The first six days in this orbit were dedicated to completing the science instrument commissioning, doing opportunistic science measurements in coordination with NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) spacecraft, and taking measurements of the impact of the Leonids meteor shower on the lunar environment.

The team was able to conduct preliminary science activities when LADEE's orbit brought it closest to the surface of the moon and across the sunrise terminator - the transition from night to day. After those science activities LADEE completed the fourth and final block of Lunar Laser Communication Demonstration (LLCD) operations in the commissioning phase.

Everything has been going very well during commissioning activities, even though we sometimes had to deal with unexpected events. For example, on Nov. 19, at the end of an LLCD downlink of spacecraft main memory, LADEE experienced an unexpected processor reboot and came back up in safe mode. A safe mode is a self-protective measure that the spacecraft takes when something unexpected occurs. After re-establishing communications and looking at the data leading up to the event, the engineering team determined that the reboot was triggered by a watchdog timer. These timers are designed to detect when the spacecraft processor stops responding, indicating that something unusual has happened. This could occur for a wide variety of reasons, from a radiation event to a high-priority software overloading LADEE's onboard computer processor.

Engineers were able to determine the event data was clean leading up to the reboot, so after initial analysis the team decided to bring the spacecraft out of safe mode and continue the LLCD experiments. The spacecraft and LLCD have performed normally since that point.

Once the LLCD experiment phase was completed, the team prepared for and performed the OLM-4 maneuver at 8:53 p.m. PST Nov. 20. This main engine burn lowered the spacecraft into the final science orbit, which varies between 20 and 60 Km above the lunar surface. The varying altitude is caused by the moon's uneven gravity field. This was the final planned use of the large main engine on the LADEE spacecraft, which has served us extremely well during the mission. The mission now is ready to perform the main science measurements over the next several months.

Ufo Sighting In Phoenix Arizona On May 16Th 2013 Unsure If Was Ufo

At 0040 hrs i was driving due east on alameda ave toward 59 ave when an extremely bright blue light lit up the eastern sky what appeared to be approx 1 to 3 miles in front of me for approx 3 second. I stopped my car in the middle of the road because i was so bewildered by weekday i had just seen and tried to go through what it could have been and immediately concluded that it was not lightening and was way to bright to be some sort of residential light. Just add i was considering what could have possibly created the massive brightness i had just witnessed and then another flash just as bright but about one second longer happened in the exact area as before. I was even more shocked the second time. I felt a wave of lightheadedness and some discomfort in my chest for about 20 seconds as i sat stopped in the road before i realized that i should probably not sit in the middle of the road so i began driving. I have never in my life seen a light of this nature. I do not know that this was a ufo but i did not know where else to report something of this nature.

APRIL 09, 2013 - UNITED STATES - A strange UFO was seen flying during the daytime over Las Vegas, Nevada on December 28, 2012.

EYE-WITNESS REPORT:

"I've been having sightings since November 2010. Of the dozens of sightings I've had, I've only filmed about three or four. And of those I've only posted one, so far. I was in the process of making a short documentary and was going to save it for that, but it takes a long time."

"In this sighting I was looking out the back yard and something caught my eye. I knew immediately that it was worth grabbing my camera for. So I did and stepped outside and began filming what you see in the video. I have not shared this with very many people, yet. You are the first website I'm sending it to, actually, aside from posting with friends on Facebook. No one has any idea what this is. At first glance, from the ground, it kind of looks like a balloon. There is even something that appears to be a string, dangling. But upon closer inspection, this object acts like nothing I can label other than a UFO. I have seen this object before, I think. In March, 2011, I filmed something very similar in Phoenix that I hope to post soon. My theory is that this object is some sort of Orb container ship/craft. In the March video there is an orb that flies by it. There are "pod" shape contours that suggest the orbs are stored within it, perhaps. Jaime Mausson has video of similar objects that he calls Sky Serpents. He calls the orbs, "Centinels" that direct the serpents along the sky. This object looks pretty different than what he has shown, however."

"Shropshire Star - "When I was working in Shrewsbury about 12 years ago I saw a UFO tracking a Chinook helicopter flying over the countryside towards RAF Shawbury. The cloud cover was bright and overcast at the time.

The UFO was elliptical in shape and the same light grey as the cloud cover. I only saw the UFO because it had what I can only describe as an ionisation layer around it. This gave the UFO a clear outline. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. It was certainly a UFO.

I have often wondered if anyone has seen something similar.
