A Star is born.

In an awesome mass of heat and dust, a galactic spectacular betrays the origins of the sun.

Swirling gas clouds, eaten away by searing radiation, billow around 50 embryonic stars. It is an extraordinary glimpse of how the universe gives birth.

Although this stunning picture is the latest shot by the Hubble Space Telescope, the scenes of creation are not new - it all happened neariy 5,000 years before the birth of Christ.

The sea-serpent towers of cold gas are each 6 trillion miles long, which means the tips of the finger-like protrusions at their edges are each larger than our solar system. Scientists who asked for Hubble to be pointed at the site, a celebrated nursery for fledgling systems, applauded the pictures and seized on them as crucial evidence in their understanding of the universe.

Astronomer Jeff Hester, of Arizona State University, said: "The first time we saw this we were just blown away, running up and down the halls."

"This is the kind of science that justified Hubble in the first place."

The photographs, taken on April 1st and now released by the U.S. space agency NASA, show the relentless activity at the Eagle Nebula, a star-forming region in the Constellation Serpens, 7,000 light years away. The stars are formed inside EGGS - a happy acronym for what astronomers call Evaporating Gaseous Globules, and the layman would term thick clouds of hydrogen.

As the stars form, they throw out huge amounts of energy. The biggest are very bright, very hot and produce high levels of intense ultraviolet radiation.

That radiation boils the surrounding clouds away and leaves the stars for the world to see.

Hester explained: "Its like watching a desert windstorm blow light sand away, gradually uncovering buried boulders."

"What were seeing is what was buried in the clouds. In this case, it's uncovering a region that is forming yet more stars; the cloud hasn't all been eaten away." The stars themselves then go on to attract solar systems like our own. Astronomers have also been taught another lesson - how newly forming stars reach maturity.

As the clouds are blown and burnt away, no more material can cluster to the star and its size is determined.

Hester added: "For a long time astronomers have speculated why stars are the sizes they are. Here we seem to be watching at least one such process at work in front of our eyes."

Hubble's pictures are just the latest to return the massive investment - including an emergency Space Shuttle mission to repair a faulty lens - in the telescope project.

Steve Maran, of the American Astronmical Society, summed up: "The implication of these pictures may have astronomers rewriting their textbooks
again."

WHITEHALL SHOCK AS ITS CHIEF ALIEN-WATCHER ADMITS:

I BELIEVE IN UFOs

ET lives, says man from the Ministry

It was the week when John Redwood's earthly origins were called into doubt and Mr Spocks pointy ears were given away by the thousand.

So it will come as no surprise that one of Whitehall's finest has
succumbed to the power of the aliens.

Nick Pope headed the Secretariat (Air Staff) 2a office, with a brief to deal with inquiries about flying saucers and other unexplained
phenomena.

It was his calm voice which reassured the many members of the public who called to report strange lights in the sky or little green men on the lawn.

But, in possibly the most embarrassing turnaround in Ministry of
Defence history, Mr Pope has gone over to the other side.

To the horror of his employers, the 29 year old civil servant, who
now works in another part of the Ministry, has become a convert.

"I think it is fair to say that in my three years as the Government expert on UFOs, I was regarded as a bit of a maverick," said Mr Pope.

Menace

"I came into that job as an open-minded sceptic and I came out a
believer."

As if that were not enough, the errant ufologist is to publish a
book based on his experiences as Britain's first line of defence in the undeclared war against the alien menace.

Provisionally titled Open Skies, Closed Minds: Official Reactions To The UFO Phenomenon, the book is unlikely to win him many friends at the Ministry.

In fact, his bosses have already expressed their displeasure at his manuscript, for which he must get permission before publication.

The book examines all the available records in the Whitehall
archives, and talks about a number of new cases.

But Mr Pope offers little comfort for UFO buffs seeking proof of a
Government cover-up.

"We don't throw open our files en bloc, but eventually most of them filter down to the Public Record Office."

Mr Pope cannot pinpoint the moment of his conversion, but he rules
out an alien plot.

He says he was convinced by the details of a small number of British sighting's which have so far defied conventional explanation.

"Probably the best example is the Rendlesham Forest case in December
1980 where some kind of object came down in Suffolk near the RAF
bases at Woodbridge and Bentwaters."

"This is now regarded as the best attested case of a UFO crash
outside the US."

Mr Pope's conversion is likely to cause a sensation among committed ufologists.

Graham Birdsall, editor of UFO Magazine, said: "I welcome the
bravery of a man who must have experienced tremendous pressure from his superiors, but who stuck to his views."

The MoD refused to comment on Mr Pope.

But surely the men from the Ministry are wishing that someone,
somewhere, would beam him up.

Manchester 'UFO' may have been seen at Penzance

An unidentified flying object, which has had a "close encounter"
with a passenger airliner approaching Manchester airport may also
have been sighted south of Penzance.

It is claimed by Penwith UFO Research that the craft was triangular in shape and marked out by three large white lights, with a red
flashing light at the base. This description fits that of an object involved in the incident at Manchester. Jet fighter type aircraft
were also sighted at the same time."

Conventional aircraft, such as Stealth or a tanker have been ruled
out by investigators.

"The sighting lasted for two minutes but the main craft remained
visible for up to one minute further." said Jude Colwyn, a member of the UFO research team.

Sighting's of the aircraft seem to be coming more frequent and
widespread with similar reports from other parts of the country and Scotland where the craft has been sighted frequently in the
Bonnybridge area.

Penwith UFO Research would like to hear from anyone who may have
witnessed this sighting (or any other), and can be contacted on
Penzance 787612.

Investigation into crop circles puzzle

UFO experts are launching and investigation into 'extra-terrestrial'
going's on around Crewe.

Using specialist equipment a team of leading investigators of aliens from the British UFO Studies Centre is to monitor farmland for crop circles.

The project is being led by society director Eric Morris, a former
member of the armed forces and trained astronomer.

He said: "Over the summer we will be using night vision cameras in
an attempt to capture a crop circle as it is made and clear up the
mystery once and for all."

"This will be the first time the process has ever been captured on
film. I'm going to be joined by Crewe members of the organisation who are experienced in alien investigations."

"We take every sighting seriously but we hold a healthy scepticism
and try to eliminate any other explanations."

"It is possible that crop circles are caused by fair weather winds, a phenomena caused by changes in atmospheric pressure. Nobody can be certain."

The investigation comes after numerous claims of UFO sighting's
around Crewe.

Mr Morris said: "Things have been seen which no one can explain
away."

"Airports and military bases have picked up glowing unidentified
objects on radar which correspond with witness reports in Nantwich
and Crewe."

"Further studies have uncovered scorched vegetation in fields where the crafts were seen."

Now the UFO Study Centre is appealing for more witnesses to come
forward.

The hotline number is (01606) 553116.
